CRUSH PARENTS GUIDELINESWhile enthusiasm and cheering can be inspiring, and it is natural to get caught up in the emotion of the game, soccer parents should follow proper sideline etiquette. We expect the highest level of good sportsmanship and positive sideline behavior from our parents, especially sideline behavior during the games and coach-parent communication. Cheer, don't coach. This can be extremely confusing for a child and possibly contrary to Coach Mike's instructions. Be positive, never negative. Refrain from criticism, gossip or negative conversation that can affect the experience of those around you. If a player loses the ball, for example, "Way to hustle!" is much better than "You can get that ball!"
Keep some comments to yourself. Unless they are complimentary, do not direct comments to members of the opposition. Do not speak out to the referee or linesmen. Parents are to respect the decisions of the referees and are not to engage in discussion, argument or debate with the referees. Co-operate with the Team Sportsmanship Liaison (TSL) and comply with any requests to modify their behavior during games. Demonstrate good sportsmanship by applauding exceptional moves by the opposition.
Ask your child if she wants you to cheer. Her answer may surprise you.
Practice silence. Sometimes it is more relaxing for both parents and players, and you will likely view the game differently as well. Avoid running up and down the sidelines shouting. If you want to follow the action, make sure that you don't distract the players or block the view of other spectators. If you have concerns about your daughter, you are expected to address them directly with the Head Coach. You can reach him by phone or e-mail and he says that he wants to hear from you. Please do not air grievances or concerns through group e-mails. This is detrimental to team morale and will only hurt the other players. |
